A-B test for new Topic Subscriptions (24mar2022)

Ajude a traduzir para a sua língua, por favor.

Hello, all.

The mw:Talk pages project would like to offer a new [Vigiar secção] button to half of the editors here. The new [Vigiar secção] button will appear on each ==Section== of a talk page with comments. If you click the new [Vigiar secção] button, you will "subscribe" or "follow" the discussion. You will get a message in Special:Notifications when someone posts a comment in that section.

This is only for 50% of logged-in editors (not IPs). Existing editors will need to click the new button to subscribe to a discussion. New editors will be automatically subscribed to all topics that they start. The Editing team hopes this will help new editors communicate with you. You can test the [Vigiar secção] button now, on this page, by clicking on https://pt.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikip%C3%A9dia:Esplanada/geral&dtenable=1

You can learn more and talk to the Editing team at mw:Talk pages project/Notifications. If you don't like it, you can turn it off in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

This could be offered here in a couple of weeks. Please tell me if your Wikipedia does not want to try this. Whatamidoing (WMF) (discussão) 05h02min de 24 de março de 2022 (UTC)[responder]

@Whatamidoing (WMF): Is there any way to disable this feature specifically on this page? We have our own topic management and archiving system in our Village pump (see MediaWiki:Gadget-NewVillagePump.js), and it seems that both features don't work very well together. ━ ALBERTOLEONCIO Who, me? 12h02min de 19 de maio de 2022 (UTC)[responder]
@Albertoleoncio, I apologize for the delay. I haven't forgotten about you. The team hopes to make a turn-this-off feature, but AFAICT it currently does not exist. I've filed phab:T309560 so that it won't be forgotten. If there is any way to make this work now, @Matma Rex will know how to do it. Looks like the [subscribe] links have been hidden using TemplateStyles defined here: Predefinição:Discussão2/styles.css. This seems to work fine and I'm happy with this solution.
Can you also explain what exactly are the issues with topic subscriptions on these pages? As far as I can see:
  • The pages for each "topic" (e.g. Wikipédia:Esplanada/geral/A-B test for new Topic Subscriptions (24mar2022)) don't include the headings shown on the "forums" (e.g. Wikipédia:Esplanada/geral), and this means that a) notifications are not sent if you subscribe from the "forum" page, b) subscribe links don't appear on the "topic" pages.

It should be possible to fix this by changing the {{Voltar}} template used on the "topic" pages to output a level 2 heading as well (the text of the heading doesn't have to be the same for notifications to work).

  • The "[subscribe]" links generated by the tool overlap the "[ver] [editar] …" links generated by the the {{Discussão2}} template.

It should be possible to fix this with some changes to the template and CSS, if a bit annoying to do. I could figure out the details if this was the only remaining problem.

Is there anything else? Matma Rex (discussão) 19h15min de 30 de maio de 2022 (UTC)[responder]
@Matma Rex e Whatamidoing (WMF): Hi!
I did this workaround using TemplateStyles, although I didn't like it. Certain CSS classes tend to be deprecated over time, unlike a specific magic word.
The main problem is that the template {{Discussão2}} already has a specific button to watch subpages ([vigiar] links to action=watch), which would basically do the same thing as "[subscribe]", and trying to reconcile two tools for the same function, while one of them is native and the other one has only been activated by a portion of users would be... confusing? ━ ALBERTOLEONCIO Who, me? 00h26min de 31 de maio de 2022 (UTC)[responder]
A little confusing for sure, but I don't think it would be that bad. Hopefully users would have seen the "[subscribe]" on some other page first, and so would understand what it does (it seems more confusing that it isn't available here). And for total newbies, hopefully they'd be familiar with "subscribe" from some other software, and they'd ignore the other four confusing options. We should have results before the end of July. The results should be posted in mw:Talk pages project/Notifications.
If it seems to be helpful, then the Editing team will (I believe) want to turn it on for everyone. That should resolve the difficulty with one tool having only been activated for a portion of users. Whatamidoing (WMF) (discussão) 01h12min de 9 de julho de 2022 (UTC)[responder]

Update:  The new [Vigiar secção] button helps people.  You can read more about the test at mw:Talk pages project/Notifications#12 August 2022.
Thank you for participating in this test.  Because this tool helps people, the Editing team will enable this tool for everyone soon.  If you do not like it, you can turn it off "Ativar subscrição de tópicos" or "Subscrever automaticamente os tópicos" in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.
Thank you for your support with this test.  I hope you will like the new tool. Whatamidoing (WMF) (discussão) 18h06min de 16 de agosto de 2022 (UTC)[responder]
