[editar | editar código-fonte]O strappado, também conhecido como corda, [1] é uma forma de tortura em que as mãos da vítima são amarradas nas costas e a vítima é suspensa por uma corda presa aos pulsos, normalmente resultando em luxação dos ombros . [2] [3] Pesos podem ser adicionados ao corpo para intensificar o efeito e aumentar a dor. [4] Este tipo de tortura geralmente não durava mais de uma hora sem descanso, [5] pois de outra forma provavelmente resultaria em morte. [6]
Foi usado pela Inquisição medieval e por muitos governos, [7] como o tribunal de direito civil (1543–1798) da Ordem de São João na Castellania em Valletta, Malta . [8] [9]
A aplicação adequada da técnica do strappado causa danos permanentes, mas não visíveis. Samuel Johnson erroneamente inseriu este método de tortura em seu Dicionário da Língua Inglesa, um “castigo por golpes”. [10]
