Animals that are born just to die

[editar | editar código-fonte]

The mice are the main guinea pigs, because they are 99% compatible with the human's gene. In a nutshell, animal tests for cosmetic products consists of eye and skin irritation tests, which mistreat animals to the extreme until their death.

According to Fátima Fandinho, co-director of teaching and research of the Institute of Science and Technology in Biomodels of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), we still do not have a technique and/ or a technology that can replace the use of animals in tests. On the other hand, according to Renato Ivan de Ávila, researcher and the winner of the International Lush Prize Award, which motivates and supports initiatives to end or replace animal testing, the animal guinea pigs are ineffective because they are different from the real human organism. Due to his point of view, he has developed a method that evaluates if a substance or product will change the cells of our body, causing allergies.

In 2017 Rio de Janeiro was the first state of Brazil and of the Americas to create a law against the use of animals on cosmetic tests. Nowadays seven another state have a law which prohibit these tests, between them are Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Amazonas, Paraná, Pará, São Paulo and Pernambuco. However, the federal bill that bans animal testing of cosmetics is still being analyzing, since it was presented to the Brazil's Senate in 2014 but has not had a closure yet.

Currently, not only there are other resources which can replace the animals on testing, such as computational models, artificial chips that imitate the cells and tissues of the human body and high productivity screening, but also there are a lot of people and campaigns that stand up for an end to animals tests.

One of the latest actions that supports the cause happened on April 28th of this year in the Legislative Assembly, where congressmen discussed alternative ways for testing cosmetic products.
