Sophie Xeon[1] (nacida el 17 de septiembre de 1986), más conocida como Sophie o SOPHIE es una cantante, compositora, productora y DJ escocesa. Ella se caracteriza por su estilo sintetizado y eléctronico del pop. Ha participado en la composición y producción de canciones de Madonna, Lady Gaga, Vince Staples, Charli XCX,[1][2] entre otros. Desde 2013 se hizo conocida por sencillos "Lemonade" y "Bipp". En 2018 lanzó el álbum Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides, el cual ha sido aclamado por la crítica especializada (Metacritic, Pitchfork) e incluso le otorgó a Sophie una nominación al Grammy a Mejor Álbum Dance/de Música Electrónica.[3]

Sophie creció toda su vida en Glasgow, Scotland.[4] Su interés en la música empezó cuando era pequeña, su padre reproducía cassettes de música electrónica. A los nueve años comenzó a escribir sus propias canciones, incluso les pidió si podía abandonar la escuela para ser productora musical, finalmente continuó sus estudios. En su adolescencia siguó componiendo canciones, incluso se prometió a sí misma que "No saldría de su habitación hasta hacer un álbum". En ese periodo aprendió a ser DJ y productora[5]
Comenzó su carrera musical en una banda llamada Motherland, más tarde colaboró con artistas del sello PC Music, como Danny L Harle[6]
En 2013 publicó su primer sencillo "Nothing More To Say", el que se comprendía de "Vox", "Dub" y "Eeehhh".[7] Más tarde lanzó "Bipp", el que se llevó la atención de la crítica, incluso Pitchfork la clasificó al puesto 56 de las mejores pistas del periodo 2010-2014. También el 2014 lanzó "Lemonade", canción que fue parte de una campaña publicitaria de McDonald's.
2015-2017: PRODUCT e colaborações[editar | editar código-fonte]
En 2015 se confirmó una colaboración con Charli XCX, luego se reveló que supuestamente estarían trabajando en un próximo álbum de estudio, finalmente en noviembre del mismo año Sophie publicó su álbum PRODUCT.
En febrero de 2016, Charli XCX lanzó su EP "Vroom Vroom" producido por SOPHIE. A finales de 2016, también participó en la producción del sencillo After the Afterparty como un teaser al próximo álbum de XCX, que es acompañada por la voz de Lil Yachty, incluso SOPHIE hizo cameos en el videoclip oficial del sencillo.
En 2017 colaboró con la productora Cashmere Cat. Y apareció junto a la ex integrante de Fifth Harmony, Camila Cabello en "Love Incredible" y con MØ en "9 (After Coachella)"
2017-hoje: Oil of Every Pearl's Un Insides[editar | editar código-fonte]
En octubre de 2017, SOPHIE regresó después de casi dos años sin actividad en solitario a lanzar el primer sencillo de su próximo álbum, "It's Okay to Cry", la primera canción en la que usa su voz y su imagen en su trabajo. Posteriormente le reveló a la prensa acerca de ser una mujer transgénero.[2] Más adelante hizo su debut en televisión, donde estreno canciones recién grabadas como "Ponyboy", la que fue el próximo sencillo que sería estrenado el 7 de diciembre de 2017 junto a un videoclip autodirigido. El tercer sencillo del álbum fue publicado el 16 de febrero del 2018 y el videoclip el 4 de abril del mismo año. Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides fue lanzado el día 15 de junio de 2018 con su propio sello discográfico, MSMSMSM.
Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides fue catalogado como uno de los mejores álbumes del 2018, según Pitchfork Media, Metacritic, The Guardian, entre otros. Incluso fue nominado al Grammy por Mejor Álbum Dance/de Música Electrónica.

Sophie primarily uses the Elektron Monomachine and Ableton Live to create music.[8] Instead of sampling, instrumentals are built from waveforms.[9] Likening the construction of a track to building a sculpture out of different materials, Sophie uses the Monomachine to create sounds resembling "latex, balloons, bubbles, metal, plastic, [and] elastic."[9][8][10] AllMusic wrote that Sophie's "sophisticated, hyperkinetic productions" feature a "surrealist, blatantly artificial quality", typically making use of high-pitched female vocals in addition to "sugary synthesizer textures, and beats drawing from underground dance music styles."[11] The New York Times described Sophie's work as "giddy fun, but [...] also an invitation to consider pop's pleasures, structures and gender expectations, and pop's commercial status as both a consumer item and an emotional catalyst."[12] The Fader likened it to "K-Pop, J-Pop, Eurodance at its most chaotic, and even turn of the millennium American/UK boybandisms."[13] When Billboard asked Sophie what genre her music falls under, she replied "advertising".[14]
Sophie remained anonymous for some time, concealing her identity in interviews by masking her voice or covering parts of herself.[15][16] At one Boiler Room show, drag performer Ben Woozy was recruited to mime a DJ set while Sophie pretended to be a bodyguard.[17] She stated that she decided on the moniker Sophie because "it tastes good and it's like moisturizer".[15] Sophie's early visuals came from a series of colourful images she refers to as "Homemade Molecular Cooking".[15] Her singles' cover art often depicts objects made from plastic or other industrial materials, an idea that originated from discussions with John Roberts, a fellow electronic musician.[18] At the POPcube event, Sophie unveiled posters and postcards outlining the products to be offered through her online store, which included a set of wedge heels, a puffa jacket, and unique sunglasses. Although these products were offered for sale when the album was released, they were immediately sold out except for a "body safe silicone product" bundled with a special edition album, raising suspicions that these auxiliary products were never real.
The music video for her 2017 single, "It's Okay to Cry", marked the first time she had used her own voice and image in her work. In the video, Sophie appears on camera unobscured for the first time, against a backdrop of clouds and later stars. The video closes with a lightning storm that hits at the song's climax.[19]
