The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is a collection of four Brazilian national laboratories located in the district of Barão Geraldo in Campinas, São Paulo. It represents the largest national investment in science in Brazil's history. The Center replaces the Brazilian Association of Synchrotron Light Technology (ABTLuS), a social organization established by Decree No. 2,405, of November 26, 1997, by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovations (MCTI). The non-profit organization established under Brazilian Law 9.637/1998[1] is responsible for managing the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), the Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio), the Brazilian Biorenewables National Laboratory (LNBR), and the Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory (LNNano).

The four national laboratories of CNPEM have their own research projects and also participate in the cross-cutting research agenda coordinated by CNPEM, which brings together facilities and scientific competencies around strategic themes. All laboratories have their research equipment open to the academic and business community in Brazil and abroad.
Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS)[editar | editar código-fonte]
The Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory operates the only[2] synchrotron light source in Latin America and a set of scientific instrumentation for the analysis of various types of organic and inorganic materials.
Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio)[editar | editar código-fonte]
At the Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory, research is developed in frontier areas of bioscience, with a focus on biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory (LNNano)[editar | editar código-fonte]
The Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory carries out investigations with advanced materials, with great economic potential for the country.
Brazilian Biorenewables National Laboratory (LNBR)[editar | editar código-fonte]
The Brazilian Biorenewables National Laboratory investigates new technologies for the production of cellulosic ethanol.
